How to build a hiking outfit that actually works

Start with the shell: a waterproof hooded layer like the rain jacket in Switchback keeps the weather out without reading as gorp-dad. Under it, cargo joggers or a two-piece set give you stretch and storage; a drop-leg bag or tactical backpack carries the rest. Finish with lug soles — platform ankle boots or carbon-plate trail runners — because the trail does not care about your outfit until your footing does.

Are platform boots okay for hiking?
